The huge debut record from Zulu Winter is out today. It’s non-stop all gold and well worth taking a listen to ahead of their big celebration at Boston Arms on Thursday. Take a listen below and tweet us what you think: @eatyourownears

Mon 14th, May

A huge week of gigs this week, following a big one last week too - we have a couple of the biggest, best bands in the world this week and much more to get excited about too…

Perfume Genius - Monday - St. Pancras Old Church

We caught Perfume Genius on Thursday and it was jaw-dropping. Raw, intense and beautiful and most definitely unmissable He’s back again today for the lucky few who got tickets. (sold out)

The xx - Monday, Tuesday, Friday - Electrowerkz, Chats Palace, Battersea Arts Centre

Another very sold out, intimate trio of shows for The xx who are about to hit the comeback trail with rumours of an album later this year. Those lucky people in attendence will no doubt be treated to some new songs as well as those now classic cuts from the debut record at their first London shows for couple of years.

Niki and the Dove - Wednesday - XOYO

We’ve been avid fans of Niki and the Dove over the past year - and she’s sold out every venue we’ve put them in. They return to XOYO on Wednesday to celebrate the release of their stellar debut record.

Shabazz Palaces - Thursday - XOYO

Shabazz Palaces released one of our favourite albums of 2011 and have a magical live show to boot. The odd-rap team takeover XOYO on Thursday night for a rare London show.

Zulu Winter - Thursday - Boston Arms

A band whose rapid rise has been unbelievable. They didn’t exist a year ago, not nearly even - but they play Boston Arms on Thursday to celebrate the release of their debut album ‘Language’. It’s fantastic and we’re willing to bet this is the last time you get to see them in humble surroundings.

Spector - Thursday - Electric Ballroom

Spector are another band whose rise has been rapid and impressive. They have released killer single after single in anticipation of a debut album that will surely feel like a greatest hits. Come and see them play those crowd-pleasers at Electric Ballroom on Thursday.

Mystery Jets - Friday - Brixton Academy

Mystery Jets are in celebration mode too - having just released a brilliant record ‘Radlands’. The band hit Brixton for a big date and bring some killer support with them: Slow Club, Theme Park and Peace. Get down early for a long evening of great music.

Fri 11th, May

We’re huge huge fans of Malcolm Middleton and the former Arab Strap guitarist returned recently with his Human Don’t Be Angry record. It’s a stellar piece of work and not to be slept on. If you haven’t heard it yet, check out it out below and then come and see him play Cargo on the 21st of May!

LISTEN: HUMAN DON’T BE ANGRY

Thu 10th, May

Walls are back to play for us soon. The show happens at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen on the 28th of May and we can’t wait. They kindly let us pass on one of the highlights from their new Remix record (out on May 28th too…) by the excellent Holy Other.

He twists Sunporch into a yearning, otherworldly post-rave jam. The rest of the remix set is brilliant too and well worth grabbing in anticipation of the show. For now though grab that mix below…

Walls - Sunporch (Holy Other Remix)

Thu 10th, May

Loving this slightly meta video from the Spector boys who take to the desert for ‘Celestine’. Their show at Electric Ballroom is inching ever closer (17th of May) and we’d definitely advise booking now!

Thu 10th, May

Ahead of their show at Bishopsgate Institute we roped Sammy Seven from S.C.U.M in for one of our YouTube mixes. The bands wealth of influence and taste comes across strongly in this video-list and SS dips his toes in a load of stuff we hadn’t come across before. A real treat. Take a look above and read the explanations below…

Kill - Amazing soundtrack by Berto Pisano, we used one of the tracks from it for a recent series of playlists we put together on our website. I love this scene, it seems so out of character for James Mason, drug dealers doing somersaults in suits with a hairy soundtrack.

Fuego en Castilla - This was shown to me by a friend of ours who has conducted film nights around london for a few years called Stanley Schtinter. He was showing a series of shorts by Jose Val Del Omar, this one really stuck out for me. Religious iconography aside, all aspects of this piece of film are stunning. The sound that accompanies the images is fantastic.

Prey - I’ve recently become quite interested in the Vampix video label; they put out a lot of horror films that would later be banned in the U.K. I bought this one recently and really loved it. Again, the music that accompanies it is brilliant, filthy synthesizer drones. The story line is pretty laughable but it still managed to scare the shit out of me.

Jean Claude Vannier - For the band, Jean Claude Vannier is one of our biggest influences. The fact this footage exists at all is incredible. It’s his collaboration with Yves Saint Laurent, when amazing fashion, music and art all intertwine.

Church going  - Any footage of John Betjeman is always really fascinating and to see him with philip larkin talking about their writing and in particular Larkins ‘church going’ is brilliant. A lost side to britain which is so nice to see captured on film.

Main Booka - R.d Burman is a prolific bollywood composer who has made some incredible records over the years. Its very silly but i love it.

Don - Again the soundtrack…

Solar flares burn for you - Essentially a short road movie, i saw this the first time i visited the bfi mediatheque on the south bank, it was part of a series of short films about ‘psychedelic london’ or something like that. Robert wyatt wrote and realeased the soundtrack for this, another great piece of electronic composition. A really great piece of film.

Townes Van Sandt - S.c.u.m went through a massive american country and folk patch at the time we were touring again into eyes and i fell in love with this film. Heartworn highway is a look at the resurgence in country music among the second generation of recording artists in the south in the seventies. The piece of footage stands out towers above the rest, a beautiful performance and a great track.

R. Crumb - One of my favorite r crumb sketches.

Wed 9th, May

Four Tet is back - with a new single on his ever-brilliant TEXT label. Stay tuned for more news soon! For now, stream ‘Jupiters’…
