NAKED are Agnes Gryczkowska and Alexander Johnston and their debut album ZONE is a brutal and distorted experimental pop vision out September 30th worldwide.

Reflecting a disenchanted youth’s masochism of digital-overloading, the young band explore themes of human isolation and the contorted nature of sex and physicality. ZONE is our sensory system heightened – a raw, overwhelming and beautiful experience.

The album is co-produced with Paul Corley – the engineer and composer renowned for his work with Oneohtrix Point Never, Ben Frost and Anohni – and follows ‘Youth Mode’ EP released in 2015. In the last year they debuted at SXSW, produced Mykki Blanco’s ‘Moshin In The Front’, and the film score to ‘A Silent Man’ directed by Charlotte Colbert, starring Sophie Kennedy Clark.

“…macabre take on pop. Backlit and smoky, the group blasted the audience with as much white noise as lush melodies… Naked are not for the faint hearted but it’s not a case of emperor’s new clothes.” – The Guardian, March 2016

RT40: A Night of Collaborations

JOHN GRANT & WRANGLER
SCRITTI POLITTI & ALEXIS TAYLOR
THE POP GROUP & PROTOMARTYR
Barbican
Saturday 22 October
Silk Street London EC2Y 8DS

£20-£27.50 ADV 7:30PM

Opening the series of events celebrating Rough Trade’s 40th anniversary is a night of collaborations at the Barbican, alongside pop up and spoken word performances, a Rough Trade shop and some afternoon sessions as part of the Battle of Ideas festival.

First up at the Barbican are post-punk bands The Pop Group and Protomartyr. Pioneers of the post-punk scene, British band The Pop Group formed in Bristol in 1977 out of a sense of disenchantment with the increasing conservatism of punk, and were signed to Rough Trade within 12 months of forming. Here they collaborate with US band Protomartyr, who formed in 2008 and have released 3 albums to date.

The event continues with collaborations between Scritti Politti and Alexis Taylor as well as John Grant and Wrangler (feat. Stephen Mallinder). British band Scritti Politti was originally formed in 1977 by Welsh singer-songwriter Green Gartside and first signed to Rough Trade Records in 1979. Here he collaborates with Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, whose latest album Piano came out in June 2016 on Moshi Moshi.

Wrangler is a new project, featuring members of influential acts such as Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire – whose association with Rough Trade goes back to the very roots of the independent scene), Phil Winter (Tunng) and Benge (John Foxx & The Maths). Here they team up with John Grant – American singer/songwriter from Denver, Colorado and former lead vocalist with cult favourites The Czars, whose third solo album Grey Tickles, Black Pressure received great critical acclaim. John Grant said: “As a huge fan of Cabaret Voltaire and electronic music in general for over 30 years, it is a huge honour and a dream come true for me to have the opportunity to collaborate with Wrangler”.

Stephen Mallinder added: “Joining forces with John seemed to be the consequence of like-minded spirits drawn together and the inevitable trajectory of our collective planets. We had a great opportunity to spend time working on something very specific and original – to literally bring together the raw elements common to all us – analogue synths, sequences, drum machines, fat basslines, weird noises, beautiful (and wonky) voices.”

The Raincoats and Angel Olsen

Islington Assembly Hall
Thursday 3 November

£18 ADV 7:30PM

As part of our series of events celebrating Rough Trade’s 40th anniversary, we are very excited to have legendary band The Raincoats collaborating with Angel Olsen in the beautiful surroundings of Islington Assembly Hall. The Raincoats spoke to us about what the night means to them:

“When Nina Hervé from Rough Trade approached The Raincoats last autumn to ask us to take part in Rough Trade’s 40th Anniversary for a collaboration with a contemporary independent artist there was no doubt in our minds who that should be. We had just got back from seeing Angel Olsen perform two amazing shows in Portugal, which totally blew us away. It was a perfect meeting and nothing can compare to experiencing such a remarkable woman perform. She was indeed the only one and it made our hearts race.

Our relationship with Rough Trade goes back 40 years to 1976 when the shop in Kensington Park Road opened and that relationship has been one of the longest and most precious in our history. The Raincoats recorded their first single with Rough Trade in 1979 and four studio albums were produced through an extraordinary partnership.

Angel is about to release her stunning third album ‘My Woman’ in September and has made time in her touring schedule to get together with us. She is one of the most talented and special artists around and this collaboration is a dream come true for us all – the excitement we feel about this collaboration is breath-taking and it just can’t be missed.”

Sarah Neufeld

STEFAN SCHNEIDER
The Lexington
Tuesday 8 November
96-98 Pentonville Road London N1 9JB

Sarah Neufeld is a violinist and composer based in Montréal, Canada. Best known as a member of Arcade Fire, she is also a founding member of the acclaimed contemporary instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre, and most recently as half of an exciting new duo with renowned saxophonist Colin Stetson.

On February 26, 2016 Sarah Neufeld released her second full length album, The Ridge. It is a body of work that sees Neufeld moving away from her debut Hero Brother’s classical minimalism and sepulchral ambience, and into the world of rhythmic pop minimalism. The new album employs more emphasis on vocalizations than Neufeld’s previous works; the interplay between Neufeld’s voice and violin has become strongly integrated and narrative. The album also features Arcade Fire’s Jeremy Gara on drums, adding greater layers to the compositions, creating an intense, dynamic atmosphere, and a captivating listen from start to finish.

In 2016, Neufeld will be touring extensively in support of The Ridge and we’re super excited to welcome her to the Lexington on 8 November, where she will be joined by drummer Stefan Schneider.
