JACK NORTHOVER
The Slaughtered Lamb
Wednesday 13 November 2013

£12 ADVANCE

We are really excited to announce that Ólöf Arnalds will be playing an intimate show at the Slaughtered Lamb in November.

We can look forward to hearing Olof play familiar tracks as well as preview new material and perhaps even some covers of her favourite artists.

Classically educated on the violin, viola and self-taught on guitar and charango, Ólöf’s most distinctive asset is, nonetheless, her voice – instantly captivating and possessed of a magical, otherworldly quality. Favourably compared with the likes of Vashti Bunyan, Judee Sill and Kate Bush, Ólöf’s approach to making music remains highly individual: playful but intimate; accessible and uplifting, yet deeply personal and suffused with a timelessness that goes beyond the puckish inscrutability of her native tongue.

Scala
Friday 8 November 2013

£14.50

We are thrilled to announce the Pastels’ autumn show at Scala.

Their brilliant new album ‘Slow Summits’, released last May via Domino, is the culmination of all the music they’ve been engaged in since their 1997 set, Illumination. Not quite as shadowy a presence as sometimes suggested, their music has continued to grow by way of other activities; a well regarded film soundtrack (The Last Great Wilderness, Geographic, 2003), some theatre pieces (for 12 Stars) and a collaboration with Japan’s Tenniscoats (Two Sunsets, Geographic, 2009). Slow Summits gathers on all these works but moves off in newer and older ways too with its flowing montage of autumn instrumentals, pop songs, slow motion build ups and suddenly optimistic melody lines.

Recorded in Glasgow by John McEntire and Bal Cooke, and mixed in Chicago by McEntire, Slow Summits features the core Pastels lineup of Stephen McRobbie, Katrina Mitchell, Tom Crossley, Gerard Love, Alison Mitchell and John Hogarty. Guests include original member Annabel Wright (Aggi) and Norman Blake. Two-thirds of To Rococo Rot (Stefan Schneider and Ronald Lippok) contribute and Tenniscoats too. Kicking Leaves features a memorable string arrangement from Craig Armstrong, the Glasgow-based composer. the Glasgow-based composer. It features a two drum sets approach to music, a love of elongated jams and the turnaround.

We’re sure that Slow Summits is going to leave a deep impression on 2013 and can’t wait to bring it to you.

JAMES YORKSTON + JON THORNE + SUHAIL YUSUF KHAN

In 2012, Dewar’s hosted an experiment. Musicians from India and the UK were placed in a makeshift recording studio in Edinburgh for a week and asked to come up with an album of original songs. King Creosote, Suhail Yusuf Khan, The Pictish Trail, Slow Club, Found, James Yorkston, Raghu Dixit and others came and went, collaborating and creating with those they met. The results were rather special.

In the spirit of that album, three of those acts are on tour together for the first time, playing together as a trio and performing a semi-improvised mix of traditional music from India and the UK/Ireland alongside their own compositions.

Youth Lagoon

ANNA MEREDITH

£15 ADVANCE

THIS SHOW IS NOW SOLD OUT.

Trevor Powers, whose stage name is Youth Lagoon, began writing his debut albumThe Year of Hibernation in 2010.  Based around the idea of psychological dysphoria, Powers tried to document the trailsof his mind through songs of minimalism and hypnotic ambiance.  Powers later described his writing process as “my mind communicating with me, not the other way around…it can take me to scary places but I’ve realized those bizarre thoughts I have don’t define me.”  After signing with Mississippi-based label Fat Possum Records in 2011, he toued much of the following year before going back into solitude to write.

Wondrous Bughouse, Powers’ sophomore album (due March 5 worldwide via Fat Possum), was spawned from what he describes as “becoming more fascinated with the human psyche and where the spiritual meets the physical world.”  During the time he wrote, Powers became intrigued with the metaphysical universe and blending those ideas with pop music.

“Youth Lagoon is something so personal to me because writing music is how I sort my thoughts, as well as where I transfer my fears,” explains Powers.

“My mental state is usually pretty sporadic…a lot of this record was influenced by a fear of mortality but embracing it at the same time.  Realizing that human life is only great because it is temporary.  Experimenting with ideas about dimensions.  I’m not a gifted speaker, so explaining things is difficult for me.  But music always makes sense.”

Youth Lagoon will be supported by Anna Meredith.

Anna Meredith is a composer and performer of electronic and acoustic music.

Her acoustic material has been performed around the world by many leading orchestras and ensembles. She has been composer in residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and was the 2010-2011 PRS/RPS Composer in the House with Sinfonia ViVA.

Her 2nd EP, Jet Black Raider has just been released on Moshi Moshi Records and has been described as “epic” by The Fly, “brilliantly inventive, outlandish and bewitching” by Fake DIY, “hugely impressive” Clash Magazine and ‘smart, intrepid, admirable and rare’ by Pitchfork.
