Top 5 Mark Kozelek Moments

Here at EYOE we’re big fans of the storied career of Mr. Kozelek, and excited to have him at Field Day and then Union Chapel. It means there’s no excuse for missing the man, or indeed, for not seeing him twice. Before we get too carried away, here are five of our favourite Kozelek moments.

Grace Cathedral Park

Where to start but the beginning and the dewy-eyed nostalgia-fest that is ‘Grace Cathedral Park’. It’s still one of his most alluring moments, and sets out his ticket as a man obsessed with the passing of time pretty sharpish. Not a wasted second in this pretty beautiful song.

Michigan

Here our boy Kozelek comes pretty close to fist pumping, or at least optimism – a rarefied emotion in Kozelek songs. But when he does it, like on ‘Michigan’ he hits the spot pretty hard. There’s plenty of quotable gems in this one too – ‘I don’t need a house in Lake Michigan / I don’t need a purpose to plan things / I just wanna feel your pulse again’. Awww.

Carry Me, Ohio

A song Kozelek released under his Sun Kil Moon moniker on career highlight ‘Ghosts of the Great Highway’, if this one doesn’t move you then you might want to have somebody take your pulse. Here, and elsewhere on that record Kozelek goes deep on the meaning of life and memories and what remains is an album that should stand the test of time.

Moments

Pretty highlight from ‘Old Ramon’, a pretty minor release in the grand scheme of things, but still vintage Kozelek at work here. He goes long on this, stretching out a canvas of warm emoting for 7 good minutes. Bathe in it for a little while.

Neverending Math Equation On paper this is still one of those ideas that feels as though you might have dreamed it. But it happened, Kozelek released an entire album of Modest Mouse covers, and this take on ‘Neverending Math Equation’ still sounds great. Strangely the nostalgia, and road trip feel of Modest Mouse aligns itself perfectly with classic Kozelek narratives.

Electrelane

Tomorrow, Electrelane play their first live UK show in over 3 and a half years at the Manchester Academy before playing in London for their already sold out show at The Scala.  To celebrate their reunion, they are taking over some of the content at DrownedinSound and today they have shared a YouTube mix which you can watch/listen to HERE.

Steve Mason and Dennis Bovell

Next Wednesday 27th July sees Steve Mason and Dennis Bovell bring their unique project, a dub reinterpretation by Bovell of Mason’s ‘Boys Outside,’ to The Shacklewell Arms for an extremely intimate gig.

The original was released last year to much critical acclaim: Uncut Lead Review gave it 4 stars and called it “Mason’s finest record,” The Daily Telegraph described it as “hypnotic future pop” and The Observer said, “this poignant album finds Mason finally living up to his early promise,” and also called it a “sublime new album of hymnal electronic soul.”

With two such widely respected artists, who have a genuine appreciation for each others work, working together on this project, it really does promise to be an exceptional evening.
