Jamie Lidell

Next Thursday our favourite Warp artist turned Soul-revivalist will take the stage at KOKO. To say we’re looking forward to it would be an understatement. Jamie Lidell is one of the very best live acts around at the moment, with no stage too big, no festival crowd too huge for the man. It also gives us an excuse to post this great Takeaway show from La Blogoteque:

Gold Panda Twitter Index

Gold Panda makes some of the most inventive electronic music going at the moment. He also has one of the best Twitter accounts going, it’s a continuous stream of laughs, retweets of haters and updates on his near-constant battle with Orange about his phone bill. Here’s a top ten tweets we put together:

10. “Got a really dry right ear lobe today.”

9. “Another week another service suspension from Orange.”

8. “Just ate some yogurt with the cardboard tag from some newly bought boxers. Tour survival skillz.”

7. “Fell asleep in cab. Woke up afraid.”

6. “I’m an electronic musician, mate. My soundcheck is making sure my space bar works.”

5. “Got enough wax in my ears to press my next 7 inch.”

4. “To celebrate the release of my debut album Orange have cut off my phone due to my bill being FUCKING MASSIVE AGAIN.”

3. “Dear Orange, I can’t stop international data roaming like some kind of fuckin’ data roameo. I think I have a problem.”

2. “Just saw Fat Man Scoop at Newark airport. He didn’t even to tell me to throw my hands up and I had more than $10 in my pocket too.”

1. “goldpanda FACT: My cat is called Missy Elliott.”

Anna Calvi’s mastery of the electric guitar and entrancing performance have made her the musicians musician, she’s been hand picked as support on tours for The Golden Silvers, The Invisible, and Johnny Flynn.  Her dark romantic songs are born of her influences – Nick Cave, The Velvet Underground, Ravel and Debussy, and all is delivered live with harmonium, vintage telecaster and dark, phonographic croon.

And ESBEN AND THE WITCH
Plus Special Guests

Wednesday 9th February 2011
Doors 20.00
XOYO, 32-37 Cowper Street
London
EC2A 4AP
www.myspace.com/esbenandthewitch

ESBEN AND THE WITCH have been gaining momentum over the past few months, releasing a super limited edition single through the Too Pure singles club, and playing a very well received set at this years Field Day festival. Their music is ethereal, only more in the eerie than Enya sense of the word, an eeriness inspired as much by books as any record – they're as into Bacon and Bosch as they are Björk or (Kate) Bush. They hover enigmatically between goth, electronica, trip-hop and post-rock. In Fisher and Copeman's by turns soft and stormy instrumental interference of Killing Joke's tribal thunder, there are echoes of Aphex's glitchy gall, of Portishead's serene menace and of the abstract invention of Radiohead circa Kid A. Instantly captivating, they channel something romantic and gothic, a shadow of something intangible and otherworldly.

Support Acts

The support act is much maligned. From those promoters who won’t let you play unless you sell 50 tickets, to the guys who go on at 8p.m without a sound check, regularly playing to a room of ten people talking. So we at Eat Your Own Ears champion the support act, and often there is hidden gold further down our bills. Here are some particularly good upcoming supports that we are just as excited about as our main acts:

worriedaboutsatan

These guys are making some waves with their warm stretchy electronics. It’s late night/early morning music at it’s best, with the kind of atmospherics that you just can’t teach. Is going to be positively electric before Esben and The Witch.

Banjo Or Freakout

One of the best in the UK at the moment. Check out this stunning cover of one of the songs of the year ‘Since We Last Met’ by NDF. Banjo or Freakout support Gold Panda.

Dominique Young Unique

Surely destined for pop stardom is Dominique Young Unique, our support for Cocknbullkid. The production on this song is build to last as flips you upside down. Enjoy this slice of fun.

Esben and the Witch

We can barely contain our excitement for seeing Esben and the Witch tonight. This video is probably an accurate representation of how we will feel afterwards.

Definitely one not to miss!
